Visiting Southern Nevada | Spring and Summer 2015
Everyone knows Las Vegas for the world-class vacation destination it is, and with good reason – the iconic Las Vegas Strip is the only place in the world offering such a particular brand of round-the-clock fun in the heaping doses it does. Still, communities throughout southern Nevada prove a venture outside of Sin City can be just as rewarding.
This season, the weather’s right for off-road exploring and Mesquite, set along Nevada’s eastern border, yields convenient access to the Logandale Trails Loop and the red sands of Mesquite’s surrounding deserts. Whether on dirt bike, mountain bike, or just a good long hike, follow the Key West Mine River and Seeps Trail Loop through the Virgin Mountain foothills to bask in a breathtakingly beautiful desert setting.
Don’t forget Valley of Fire State Park – Nevada’s oldest and largest State Park – between Las Vegas and Mesquite, south of Interstate 15. Experience a sunset in the Valley of Fire and its namesake becomes clear – the low afternoon sun sets the red sandstone ablaze in a vibrant display of color.
An hour west of Las Vegas, Pahrump is full of activity throughout spring and summer. If it’s a relaxing day on the green you’re after, Mountain Falls Golf Course and Lakeview Executive Golf Course have you covered. And this desert town is anything but dry, with Pahrump Valley Winery and Sanders Family Winery ready to whet your thirst during your visit.
The sky above Pahrump’s Petrack Park fills with hot air balloons, March 20th through 22nd, when the Pahrump Balloon Festival returns for it’s second year. Visiting families can expect tethered balloon rides, music and entertainment, food, and arts and crafts.
History buffs head north to Tonopah to delve into town’s rich mining past. Check out Tonopah Historic Mining Park, the Royston Turquoise Mine, and the Central Nevada Museum to dig in. Late-May visitors can celebrate the man who started it all at the 2015 Jim Butler Days. Downtown Tonopah opens up with food booths, street dancing, a parade, arm wrestling, and more. The fun goes from May 23rd through 25th – special event times vary.
