Visiting Northern Nevada
Even after the mild summer makes its way out and fall takes its place, communities from Elko to Gardnerville still provide a wealth of ways to have fun outdoors. Special events, community festivals, family-friendly activities and more – the Silver State’s northern reaches have it all this time of year.
Unlike the desert for which the southern region is known, northern Nevada experiences a cold winter – meaning now’s the time to take advantage of the Great Outdoors before the opportunity’s gone. Carson City visitors enjoy easy access to Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park and its Spooner Lake area, which is popular with anglers, hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders.
Not too far south, Gardnerville serves as the gateway to Topaz Lake Park, where fishing is plentiful and a boat ramp makes getting out on the lake for waterborne activities easy.
There’s never a dull moment in the Biggest Little City in the World. This time of year, Reno is especially alive – or maybe just especially undead. On October 24th, the 2015 Reno Zombie Crawl lets you explore downtown Reno while trying to escape hungry hoards of the walking dead. The festivities also include a large "Thriller" dance, costumed characters, and more Halloween-themed fun.
Self-proclaimed “nerds” herd into the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, November 20th through 22nd, for the 2015 Comic Con Reno, a celebration of comic books, sci-fi, super heroes and pop culture. There will also be meet-and-greets, celebrity panels, and cosplay is encouraged.
As the holiday season approaches, northern Nevada communities get into the spirit of the season in a number of unique ways. Not too far from Fernley and Fallon in Virginia City, Christmas at the Comstock 2015 celebrates Christmas the way it was in the old west. There will also be boutique shopping, a holiday parade, and fun just for the kids.
