Visiting the Las Vegas Area
It's time to plan your summer visit to the Entertainment Capital of the World. The Strip that made Sin City famous is hotter than ever, and new attractions along Las Vegas Boulevard mean there even are more ways for the whole family to have fun. Still, a venture off the beaten path provides visitors with perspective on Las Vegas' unique personality – and this season's calendar of special events is the perfect invitation to experience it now.
Get in touch with the local arts and culture by visiting the downtown Las Vegas Arts District on the first Friday of every month. The works of more than 100 artists line the streets each month, and venues like the Art Factory open up with special exhibits of their own. Browse the art, try a variety of local food offerings, and check out the feats of street performers while taking in the lively evening atmosphere. Things get started around 6 p.m.
Summer sunshine means more outdoor adventures in the expansive surroundings of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and Henderson. Just northeast of town, Valley of Fire State Park is great for a hike, and scenic stops along the way include Atlatl Rock, Seven Sisters, Mouse’s Tank, and White Domes – perfect for picnics.
Nearby Lake Mead National Recreation Area lends itself to all sorts of waterborne fun this time of year. Get out onto the water for boating, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, scuba diving, and fishing. Explore the land just off shore, where the terrain is ideal for hiking, biking, horseback riding, scenic drives, and more.
Of course, no Vegas-area visit is complete without a glimpse at the mystifying magnitude of the Hoover Dam. These days, the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge lets U.S. Route 93 travelers bypass the dam, so take Exit 2 and the Hoover Dam Access Road to get up close to the legendary structure.
