Genoa Courthouse Museum is housed in the 1865 courthouse building in Genoa, the first permanent town in Nevada. The courthouse was used while Genoa remained the county seat of Douglas County, until 1916. From 1916 to 1956, the courthouse was used as a school. In 1961, descendants of Carson Valley pioneers established the Carson Valley Historical Society and began planning for the museum. They received funds from state grants, county grants and private donations, in order to complete a major courthouse restoration project. It then became the home of the Genoa Courthouse Museum.
